The Body as Carrier — Eating Living Seeds
When we bite a raspberry full of seeds, a summer tomato, a chia seed, something awakens — far beyond the nutrition label. This is endozoochory: forever, plants have entrusted their seeds to the bellies of animals to travel. Our body is a carrier of the living. Here is why eating living seeds revives a bond that winter and modern life have almost erased.
There is a particular delight in biting into a raspberry full of tiny seeds, in sinking our teeth into a sun-drenched tomato at the heart of summer, in feeling the gel of soaked chia melt on the tongue. This pleasure is not only one of taste — and it does not fit on a nutrition label. Something far more ancient is at play.
For most of these seeds, we do not truly digest them: they pass through, intact. And yet the body seems to seek them out. Why? The answer lies not in the chemistry of the plate, but in a pact millions of years old between plants and the bellies that carry them.
Endozoochory: the pact of plants and bellies
Plants do not walk. To conquer the world, they enlisted those who move. This is endozoochory: the dispersal of seeds through the digestive tracts of animals. The plant wraps its seed in sweet, colourful, fragrant flesh — the raspberry, the cherry, the fig — the animal eats it, walks, and lays the seed down further along, in a little mound of humus already ready to nourish it.
The horse and the apple tree, the bird and the bramble, the fox and the cherry: everywhere, the same contract. Better still: the passage through the belly scarifies the seed's coat, softens it, warms it — and some seeds germinate only after this journey. The digestive tract is no tomb for the seed: it is a matrix. We carry this ancient function within us, this role of carrier that nature has entrusted to every belly.
What the living seed truly gives us — the fibre, not the label
Let us be candid: announcing the "omega-3, protein, calcium" of a chia seed swallowed whole is mistaking the gift. Its shell holds firm, and most of its interior passes through unabsorbed — exactly like the raspberry's seeds. The true gift lies elsewhere, and it is immense.
On contact with water, chia surrounds itself with a mucilage, that translucent gel: a soluble fibre that hydrates the gut, feeds the microbiota like a prebiotic, slows the absorption of sugars and settles a gentle fullness. We need not digest the seed to receive all this. The living seed nourishes us through its fibre, through its water, through its presence — and, if we grind it, through its omega-3 at last set free. The value is real; it simply is not where the label looks for it.

Our ancestors ate the living through the seasons: summer berries, autumn fruits with their seeds, grains all year round. Modern life has cut this thread. In winter especially, between preserves and white flours, nothing germinates on our plates any more — and something in us falls asleep.
To eat a living seed is to rekindle this bond: an almost ceremonial gesture, a way of restating that we belong to the living, that we are one of its links and one of its carriers. The raspberry and the tomato in summer, chia all year long: so many small doors onto nature, right there, in the spoon. This is not an idea — it is a sensation, and it can be cultivated.
We are not only eaters of the living: we are its carriers. Every living seed we welcome ties us to a pact older than humanity — that of bearing, of warming, of awakening life. Eating then becomes an act of communion.
